Accelerator Ring

What are Over Accelerator Rings and Under Accelerator Rings?

Accelerator Rings are available for drivers who are unable to operate the pedals of their car with their feet and they need an alternative way to brake and accelerate.

Accelerator Rings are fitted under or over the steering wheel and are known as Under Accelerator Rings and Over Accelerator Rings. Both of these systems are extremely easy to use.

If you are considering getting an Accelerator Ring, then give us a call and we would be happy to talk through your options on 01325 389900. Alternatively you can send us an email through our contact form and we will get back to you asap.

How does an Accelerator Ring work?

The Accelerator Ring is available in two options, electronic and mechanical, and can be fitted underneath or over the steering wheel as an aid to operating the accelerator on the vehicle. The Accelerator Ring offers full control as it is engaged by either pushing the ring down or gently squeezing the ring towards you. This means the driver remains in in command of the speed of the vehicle whilst both hands are still firmly placed on the steering wheel. For the brake, a lever is fitted to the right of the wheel which you can push away to brake. The brake also comes with horn functionality allowing you to easily drive with just your hands.

Whilst it is completely safe for someone to drive your vehicle without using the accelerator ring, we would recommend having pedal guards installed that can easily be removed when a driver wishes to use the standard foot controls. Having Pedal Guard will stop the foot pedals being pushed accidentally whilst you are operating the Accelerator Ring as well as preventing the risk of your feet slipping and becoming trapped underneath.

Do I need a Mechanical or Electric Accelerator Ring?

The decision on whether to have a Manual or Electric Accelerator Ring fitted is a personal one and is dependent on a number of key factors as well as individual requirements. For example, Electronic Accelerator Rings require lighter pressure to operate than their Manual counterparts so may be better suited to drivers with very limited movement in their hands. It is also possible to switch an Electronic Accelerator Ring off whereas a Mechanical Accelerator Ring cannot be turned off and may be at risk of being activated by mistake.

Should I get an Over or Under Accelerator Ring?

As well as deciding on an Electronic or Mechanical Accelerator Ring it is also important to consider the suitability of your vehicle. Because of where the Under Ring Accelerator is fitted it is only suitable for a more limited range of vehicles.

The positioning of Under Ring Accelerators also mean that the indicator and wiper stalks may need to be moved to allow for them to be operated safely.
